Before jumping into the Bible verses about fasting, it is very important to know what fasting is and what does the bible say about fasting and prayer.

If we defined fasting correctly: Fasting is total or partial abstinence from water and food. 

But according to the Christain fasting, it is not just for salvation but fasting actually helps you to overcome your bad habits and addictions or anything that holds you back to walk with God.

Fasting is the best way to rely on God it helps you to grow spiritually and stay connected with God.

    Types of Fasting

    •  Regular Fast (AKA Supernatural Fast or dry Fast) is basically delimiting from all food but nowadays many people can't resist them from drinking water or juice, but when Jesus did He didn't drink or eat anything for 40 days and 40 nights. 

    • Partial Fast also know as Daniel fast it is helpful for both physical and spiritual growth. If you read  Daniel 1:8- ""But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way." So, this type of fast is generally refraining from certain types of food because all we are giving up to the desires of our flesh and focusing on our spirits through fast.

    • Full Fast or  Paul Fast.- Full fast is when you take no water and food. According to the book of Esther 4:16, it says: Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for 3 days and nights.

    Fasting is the best way to stay connected with God when we fast we should always spend our time in meditating God's words because that is the only way that will keep you away from all the temptation and help you to seek God's directions.

    Bible teaches us a lot about fasting and there are many benefits of fasting as well, plus for your spiritual growth fasting is one of the most important ways or practices that can help you draw near to God.

    •  Fasting helps us to stay connected with God and disconnects us from the world's materialistic things. When you fast you start seeking for Holy Spirit that cleanse your soul from inside and makes you Holy.

    • Fasting connects our needs with God-when we fast we take all our needs and desires directly to God. According to Matthew 6:16 (ESV)- And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

    • We feed our soul with living bread and wine: Nothing can satisfy our soul except Jesus Christ. When we fast we get connected with God and invites Him into our lives and walk into His directions through His guidance.

    • Fasting makes our soul strong and when our soul is strong it will help your body, mind, and emotions to walk into the presence of God and worship Him, Just like Psalm 103:1 says "Let all that I am praise the LORD; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name."



    Final thoughts: Fasting has done tremendous work in my life and I personally know the benefits that I have received. If you are a believer you should also start fasting from today that will help your connection with God stronger and you will see how the blessings start flooding into your life.

    At least once in a week you should fast and keep yourself away from all the worldly things and just spend your time in prayer and in meditating your Bible. Surely God will guide you and show you the right way.
